Last Day of Kindergarten – School’s Out for Summer

schools-outHope everyone is having a great summer so far!

June 1st was the last day of school for us. Wow, kindergarten went by so quickly! I can’t believe it’s over already.

It’s pretty amazing how much WHMJr learned this school year. She can read almost anything now and her writing is so much better than last year, she loves math, music, and most especially art.

Kindergarten transitions

We had a bit of a rough start at the beginning of the school year. WHMJr went to preschool five days/week so I was surprised we were not prepared with the transition to kindergarten. In the beginning I think the biggest problem was all the information coming at her, everyday she would come home mentally and physically exhausted.

Also, we had to adjust to homework! Yes, homework. She would get a homework packet on Monday and turn it in on Friday. Nothing in the homework was new, it’s all what they had already learned in class, but still it’s a lot for 5 & 6 year olds – and not to mention their parents!  They mainly want kids to get in the habit of doing homework after school. They also want to teach the kids to be responsible for bringing their homework so if little Suzy forgets their homework at home, the parents are instructed to not bring it to school, it’s the child’s responsibility.

Lastly, I made the mistake of over-scheduling. We started the school year with piano lessons, swim lessons, dance class, and cheer.  It was way too many activities on top of homework so about two months in we scaled back. I got rid of the piano lesson (she wasn’t practicing anyway), and we took a break on swimming, and cheer was cancelled as the coach moved out of town. She was devastated about cheer so we added a hip hop class taught at her school, so then we were down to tap/ballet class on Monday’s and hip hop on Wednesday’s. Thankfully, once we got in the swing of things with the schedule, homework wasn’t such a fight everyday.

All in all, kindergarten was fun, but we were all really looking forward to the summer break.

Thank you to the teachers

I’d like to give a shout out to WHMJr’s teachers and staff. This was the first year of teaching for her teacher and I think she did a fantastic job. I’m sure they are all looking forward to summer break, too.

Summer plans

Summer is a great time in Northern California. The weather is hot and sunny and there are a ton of fun things to do. WHMJr will have a good mix of scheduled activities and free time. Here are our plans for summer break:

  • Camp. I signed her up for 3 days a week of summer camp so she can socialize with other kids.
  • At home. The two days she’s not in camp she is with our aupair.  There are plenty of fun activities to enjoy this summer like swimming, the library, crafts, park, play dates, movies, you name it.
  • Visit Seattle and Alaska. We’re going to visit our family for a week in July. First we will fly to Seattle for a long weekend to see family and friends and then we will spend 6 days in Anchorage at my brother’s house. I’ve been looking forward to this trip all year long.
  • Swim lessons. Hip hop ended in May and this past weekend she had her dance recital for tap/ballet so we are taking a break from dance for the summer (maybe longer). I signed her up for 1 day a week of swim lessons and she gets another swim class through camp, so schedule wise we have a relatively quiet summer.
  • Say goodbye to aupair. Sadly, it is time for our aupair of two years to return to Brazil. We love her and will miss her terribly but we are also excited for her next phase of life. It will be a difficult transition for all of us, especially as WHMJr is older now and I’m sure will remember this aupair the most.
  • Welcome new aupair. Happily, a week after our current aupair departs, a new aupair arrives. She is also from Brazil, it wasn’t intentional to have another Brazilian aupair, it just happened as she was the best candidate. I am writing a post about the aupair interview process so stay tuned…

WHMJr is going to have a lot of fun over the next few months. I’m kind of jealous that I’ll be working most of the summer and will miss out on a lot of the fun, but at least I’m off work by 4pm most days and we have a pool so we can enjoy our evening’s together as a family.

Do you have any fun plans this summer?
